The long dry summer is over and the river is back. Every hippo on it is filthy, and they are all coming to your wash.

• Pull off leaves, burrs, leeches and the odd frog by hand.
• Hose away sand and pollen, scrub off mud and red clay, soak sun-baked mud in the river.
• Brush teeth, paint toenails, rub cream into dry old skin.
• Soap and shower, then dress each hippo in the outfit it brought and send it to the lagoon.
